Clarenbach SPEAKER PRO TEM OF THE ASSEMBLY August 11, 1983 COTTON FIBER 2.3 Dear (Name): You have reason to be proud of the role you've played in furthering gay rights in Wisconsin. The movement here is strong in large measure due to the significant financial and political support that you and many others from all over the country gave us. During the 1982 election, we distributed thousands of dollars to targeted legislative races. This unprecedented effort paid off and our candidates were victorious in 14 out of 17 races. I would like to update you on what has been happening in Wisconsin since that election. As expected, a bill that would repeal our historic gay rights law has been introduced in the legislature. But at this point (because of our success in electing supportive legislative candidates and a governor who is committed to gay rights), this repeal attempt will not succeed. The momentum in Wisconsin has been in a more positive direction. Earlier this year, legislation I have authored for the past eight years to finally legalize sexual activity between consenting adults was signed into law. Now, I am happy to say, it is not only illegal to discriminate against gay men and lesbians in Wisconsin but it is legal to be one as well. Our new governor, Tony Earl, also appointed an advisory council on lesbian and gay issues, one of five such councils in the country. He has, however, taken a lot of heat for his outspoken support for the gay community. His defeated opponent, Terry Kohler, commenting on Earl's actions said "He promised to appoint queers and he has." It is obvious that if the outcome of last fall's election had been different, we would not be enjoying the advantage that we do today.
