As a Council we are firmly committed to the belief that all human life is sacred and that every person is precious in the sight of our Maker. Because of this belief, we support Assembly Bill 70 which prohibits discrimination based upon sexual orientation of an individual in the areas of employment, housing and public accommodations. We also strongly urge that you take a strong stand on this matter. We believe this bill deals directly with the question of basic human rights. We as members of the Council will further our efforts in supporting this Bill. I personally will also do my utmost to openly speak of and to support this matter in all my dealings with the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council. As a therapist I deal with many individuals who have same-sex preferences. My experience indicates that these people are far from marginal. They are however, blue- collar workers and professionals, young and old, rich and They did not wake up one morning and choose to be Many of them have gone through a long process of dealing with and accepting that painful reality. They are "different" because they have been labeled, stigmatized and rejected. poor. gay. The real issue is not that of sexual preference but rather, homophobia. This issue is ignorance and mis-infor- mation. There are too many people in society who are very much threatened by "homosexuals" due to their own insecurity. Thus, homosexuals today are used as an "emotional scapegoat". As a fellow christian and human being I can only say that I deeply suffer the pain of so many others who just happen to have another sexual orientation. Believe me they are fearful of being discovered and remain silent for fear of losing their job, etc. It is on their behalf that I speak. They are the voiceless, the fearful and the oppressed.
